what is outpatient treatment (OP)?

Outpatient treatment (OP) programs are part-time programs consisting of individual and group therapy that focus on the development of real-world coping skills for maintaining sobriety. Those who are in an outpatient program can continue to work, go to school, and take care of their responsibilities. Our online outpatient program helps people get help from the privacy of their homes.

op vs iop

Both programs are meant to help you work through the recovery process, while including treatment that meets your current needs. The main difference between an OP program and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) is the amount of time spent in treatment and level of care needed. Outpatient treatment programs are often referred to as a “step down” from IOP, while still attending weekly meetings and participating in therapy groups.

what makes lionrock op different

Our therapists use a wide variety of treatment approaches, including dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). These approaches are often used in therapy to improve mental health, making it beneficial for those who are also struggling with substance abuse. Our therapists hold Master's Degrees, with many holding Doctorate’s, combining their education with their own personal experiences of addiction, they know what it’s like for those in OP.

can we talk?

commonly asked questions

  • can I start in OP?

Most clients start in our Intensive Outpatient Treatment level of care. As clients progress through IOP, they eventually move to our step down Outpatient Program. Eventually, clients transition to our Continuing Recovery Program, an aftercare program for clients who have completed IOP and OP.

You can call our free helpline and talk to one of our admissions counselors to find the program that’s best for you - 800.258.6550 .

  • is your program 12-step based?

No. Neither OP nor IOP are 12-step programs. All of our programs are centered around cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT has been shown to help individuals identify problematic behavior, enhance self-control, correct problematic behavior, and develop coping strategies.

While CBT lays the foundation for our programs, many of our therapists use additional therapeutic modalities to meet their client’s individual needs. Many of our therapists have additional areas of specialization including post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma, grief, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and behavioral issues.

  • what is the difference between outpatient treatment and aa meetings?

SUD treatment is professional psychology, provided by licensed therapists who hold degrees at the Master and PhD levels. SUD treatment follows the best practices of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and is highly structured. It is classified as a "brief intervention" because the average length of treatment is several weeks, followed by aftercare.

Mutual self-help groups, which include the 12 Step traditions, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, and alternatives including Lionrock's CommUnity meetings, are led by peers at various levels and with various amounts of time in recovery. Depending on the group, the meeting may be very structured or less structured. Social connectedness has been shown to improve brain health by promoting the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) which creates new neurons and repairs damaged neurons and glial cells. In contrast to SUD treatment, mutual self-help group participation can last a lifetime and provides ongoing social support. Typically, there is no charge to attend mutual self-help groups, though donations are accepted.
